Wednesday Night - YOUTH LOL PDF Print E-mail

I had an absolutely great time last night at Youth LOL.  I've been working as a volunteer in youth ministry for 5 or 6 years now.  I've noticed that each year's group develops a slightly different group personality when the Seniors leave and the Middle Schoolers move up.  We've had some great groups in the past but for some reason, I really like this one.  They have great attitudes and seem to avoid some of the intra-student drama I've seen in other youth groups (of course, I'm not referring to any of ours).  They laugh a lot and seem to enjoy each other - which makes it fun for me.  And it is always more fun when Mario is there, not just because he's the coolest dude in the Cobb County (he is), but also because he siphons off some of the competitiveness between the students (and, yes, I'm talking mostly about the trash talking boys here).  In other words, Mario is so competetive that the students focus their complaining and howling (about the other team's cheating ways) at him instead of each other.  He's like TUMS.  A good antacid for the competitive heartburn.  So, to repeat myself - I had an absolutely great time last night at Youth LOL.

Now, it has been brought to my attention that Debbie and I are guilty of "speaking" to you guys when you insist on running your motor-mouths and giggling after its time to be quiet.  (And you gotta admit - when using "motor" mouths as an analogy - some of you are Ferrari's)  There was even a complaint that while we are "discussing" this with the group,  "the guilty student knows you are talking about them!"  DUH!  And that's a bad thing, how?  When you are having a stern discussion with a group because someone cheated on a test, guess who gets the most upset?  But think about it.  Haven't old people been fussing at teenagers about their motor-mouths for thousands of years?  It just wouldn't be right to stop now.  The world is in perfect harmony when teenagers talk and giggle and adults fuss.  So we will continue the tradition... the "discussions" will continue until you guys figure out how to "zip-it."

And finally - Ms Debbie has another challenge coming up.  Since we didn't have very many sign-ups the last time, I've decided to change the rules this time.  After she puts out the sign-up sheet and you've had a chance to put your "John Hancock"  on the page( that's "your signature" for those of you who slept through U.S. History), we're going to play a game where you take off your shoes and go into another room.  While you're out, I'm going to take some of those little fiddler crabs that Autumn and Nikki hate stepping on (ya know, the ones that have big painful pinchers and go crunch when you step on them) and put a couple in the shoes of everyone that hasn't signed up.  Then I'll say "GO" and you guys will rush in and see who can get their shoes on and tied the fastest.  Then I'll bring the sign-up sheet back out and you will have to sign-up to take your shoes back off.  Or you guys can just be good challenge participants and we can dispense with this unpleasantness.

At any rate - YOU GUYS ARE A GREAT YOUTH GROUP AND I WOULDN"T TRADE YOU FOR THE CHANCE TO RACE JIMMIE JOHNSON IN THE DAYTONA 500! (well, lemme think about that one for a minute!?!)

As a youth teacher, I have tried, with varying levels of success, to explain my observations on the four "intellectual" approaches to faith that emanate from our very finite human brains. In other words, in this day and age of "science", some people who fancy themselves smarter than they really are like to demean faith in God as inferior because faith is not fully observable by our five basic senses. Instead, we are told that science is the answer to the truths of the universe, even though the scientific community refutes itself completely about every 100 years (the "100 year science clock"). In fact, scientist 100 years from now will actually be laughing out loud at the pathetic theories of us 2009 ignorant barbarians. (According to Aristotle, the earth was the center of the universe. Years later, Galileo was kept under house arrest for claiming that the earth revolved around the sun. After all, the intellectuals knew better. Remember the

Dear New Life,

We are looking forward to a busy 2009 The team schedule is incredible. Maybe more complicated than ever before. We have a lot of church teams signed up and the numbers are good. Local Ecuadorian groups and our National Camps and Conferences are growing in number, participation, quality and testimony. It is more than I had hoped for. M- Fuge is filling up. Servant Life weeks are looking strong.  Carol and I celebrated our 37th anniversary in December.  I am including here a prayer gram I have been working on for the last week. It will fill in a lot of gaps of information. Dear Friends, I hope that you and your family are doing well. Carol and I are doing fine and are looking forward to a great 2009. Our daughter Karen, her husband Brandon and our grandson Caleb are in the process of moving. Brandon had been working through his understanding of God’s call for the past year. In September he felt led to put out his resume. He has been called as the Minister of Praise and

Inaugural Prayer? PDF Print E-mail

This from the Boston Globe:

“In the invocation offered by Bishop V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire at today's inaugural welcoming ceremony, the openly gay bishop called on God to "bless us with anger – at discrimination, at home and abroad, against refugees and immigrants, women, people of color, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people." Robinson was tapped to give the invocation today after an uproar over President-elect Barack Obama's invitation to evangelical pastor Rick Warren, an opponent of same-sex marriage, to give the invocation during the inauguration Tuesday.”

Bishop Robinson failed to mention the name of Jesus (he had forewarned us that he would not be offering a “Christian” prayer because some people in the U.S. are not Christian).  He did mention God a few times, including the following excerpt…

Bless us with compassion and generosity – remembering that every religion’s God judges us by the way we care for the most vulnerable in the human community, whether across town or across the world.

-

Hmmm...wouldn't you expect a seminary trained Bishop to know that every religion's "god" won't be judging anything. And, wouldn't the use of a capital "G" be improper for those "little" gods?

-

He threw in a few more statements about discrimination and intolerance, basically fussing at the country, not about rampant immorality, but about being intolerant of whatever folks decide is right and wrong.  I suppose we should take Bishop Robinson’s advice and throw out the Bible as a standard for living and replace it with whatever feels good to each individual.  Then we can all live together in love and tolerance.(forgive my sarcasm please)  And since God keeps mentioning an unchanging standard for right and wrong in his word… well, I’m at a loss on how to reconcile these two viewpoints.

Here’s my question… Why even have an Inaugural Prayer at all.  In my mind, the whole mess just mocks God.  In his own words God tells us that things do not go well for those who mock God.  We may be shooting ourselves in the foot.
